Have you ever experienced the art / craft / sport of spelunking? Spelunking, you ask! If you don’t know the meaning of the term, you’ve apparently not experienced the excitement of entering a cave and descending to its depths. Yet, that is exactly what you’re being invited to do as we engage in this year’s grand adventure of Cave Quest Vacation Bible School. In less than two weeks, you’ll have the opportunity to join with over thirty children and youth (and, oh yes, in addition, there’ll be quite a team of robust adults joining them!) in entering the deep, dank, dark realm of the creepy, crawly habitat of–well, who knows what! But then, discovery is part of the excitement, right?
This will be the fourth consecutive year of offering a Vacation Bible School open and welcoming of all as we come, prepared to lead our children through an introduction to bible messages that will be with them for life. But, oh–oh you say! Children–did you say children? For many adults, nothing comes close to inflicting infectious fright among mature, refined adults than the prospect of spending time with children! Well, perhaps death and public speaking rank right up there. But children? Really?
Well, the good news is that we now have a growing number of adults (both younger and older) as well as older youth who are graduates of former Vacation Bible School adventures, who are seasoned companions and are actually looking forward to the start of this year’s expedition on Monday morning, July 18th through Friday evening’s all church family event of a hotdog potluck and musical performance beginning at 6:00 pm. They’ve already taken the plunge and know that it’s not only possible to survive such a week of childhood immersion–it’s more likely that this may be the best experience that you will have this summer to thrive in the beauty of true Christian community.
Children…children? What do you do with them? How do you lead them? Well, the curriculum from Group Publishing as well as the expert training you’ll receive by VBS director Vicki Poli and assistant directors Susan Sanderson and Holly Zaccone will prepare you well for the fun and excitement to come. But, even more importantly, you may just discover that all the trepidation of leading a group of children through a week of Vacation Bible School will melt away as you observe the passage from Isaiah 11:6 come to life: “The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them” (NRSV).
Why not make plans today to call Vicki or the church office and sign on as a fellow adventurer on a spelunking expedition you’ll never forget! And–become that adult who’ll never be forgotten by one or more of the children who’ll lead you!
