From bondage to exile the Israelites wandered in the wilderness. Imagine what it must have been like to wander the desert for 40 years, looking for a place to call home. The constant change, the unrelenting movement from one place to another, must have seemed as though no end were in sight. Fear, impatience, doubt became roadblocks in their journey. Their faith was tested. Not surprisingly, we encounter the same stumbling blocks in our lives today. Fear, impatience and doubt can hold us back as we make our way through life’s passageways. Sometimes the paths are straight and smooth; other times they are twisty and convoluted, and we wander and lose hope just like the Israelites once did. By trusting in the Spirit of God, practicing patience, and having Faith, we will through the grace of God be given direction and be led home.

This image of a “serpent on a pole” can be understood by Christians as a precursor for the image of “Christ (sin) crucified.” When you look upon the cross of Jesus, does it hold the same promise for you as the bronze serpent held for the Israelites? How do you find life through a symbol of death?
