Prompt thought of the week:

We too often look for security (love) in powerful figures, sure that they can “fix” things for us. It was no different for the people of the First and Second Testaments. They were looking for Kings, Saviors, and Liberators who would offer peace and security in uncertain times. And they often looked “in all the wrong places.” The Pharisees just can’t believe that this trouble-maker, rule-breaker named Jesus is the One, the Son of God and Savior. Time and again, Jesus uses the metaphor of a Shepherd to teach us how we ought to love and care for each other. No wonder; the Shepherd does what is needed when it is needed, regardless of the “rules.”

When I read these scriptures, it reminded me of the last visit I had with a friend of mine who was on hospice.  He appeared content, comfortable, and aware of his situation.  His daughter was also with us as we had a short visit.  She had told us she didn’t believe that he had much longer to live.

He was sitting in his recliner and resting, as if he were waiting for the shepherd to lead his flock home.  He appeared to be smiling and to be happy with his decision to follow the shepherd/Jesus.

A few days later we received the message that he had passed away.  A feeling of joy came over me.  It warmed my soul.  I knew that he was following the shepherd’s lead.

The Philmont Grace

For food, for raiment,

for life, for opportunity,

for friendship and fellowship,

we thank thee O Lord
