Wellness Tip #1: This One May Be the Opposite of What You Thought!

¤ Get a little sun exposure. ¤
We work indoors and travel in cars with tinted windows. If we do go out, we slather on the sun screen and put on sunglasses and a hat. After all, we’ve heard and read that sun exposure = skin cancer.
But, 10-15 minutes several times weekly of sun exposure without sunscreen to our legs, arms, back, face and neck is not bad. In fact, it’s good for us!
Limited sun exposure improves mood and increases our Vitamin D levels. And, since Vitamin D likely affects the function of every cell in our bodies, we receive a myriad of benefits including:
- Improved immune system function
- Stronger bones
- Reduced risk for type 1 diabetes, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, & a variety of cancers.
However, we should have great respect for the sun. Here are some things to consider alongside your limited sunning:
- Avoid sunburn. Your skin should look normal to very slightly pink after your 10-15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure.
- You don’t need more than 10-15 minutes several times weekly of unprotected sunning. Make sure to wear sunscreen for any other sun exposure beyond the 10-15 minutes.
- You won’t get much Vitamin D if you live in more northern climates or if it is a cloudy day. So, choose your sunny days wisely in the summer, in order to build stores of Vitamin D for the winter.
- We’ll discuss more about recommended sunscreens and Vitamin D supplements in future wellness tips.
The Experiment: Put on a pair of shorts and a sleeveless shirt and head outside on days when you have some sun. Start with 2 minutes of unprotected exposure, and add 1 minute daily as you are able until you are up to 10-15 minutes several times weekly. Build your exposure more slowly if you notice anything more than a slight pinkish tinge to your skin after sunning.
Silence Your Inner Critic: You may think you look terrible in shorts or you don’t like getting hot. Let those thoughts pass with a little chuckle. And, then do the experiment anyway. You don’t have to let your unimportant thoughts rule your health.
