“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.”
I found this wonderful quote by Audrey Hepburn while I was doing research for this article. She defines a way of living and being wise that I believe is what God wishes us to do.
The third chapter of James talks about two kinds of wisdom. The first is wisdom from above which is compassionate and merciful. This wisdom comes from God. The second is ambitious and selfish. This type is earthly and does not come from above. As human beings we are not immune to ambition and selfishness. However, we can daily strive for the wisdom God wishes us to practice.
Knowledge is the accumulation of facts from various sources. Wisdom is the ability to use judgment in the use of the knowledge you have gained. I think that the Serenity Prayer is a concise way of expressing wisdom:
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
