A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25
This time of year we are inundated with requests for financial support from campaigns and causes and candidates. Each plea suggests that only by our giving will the world keep from tipping dangerously into hopelessness and chaos. Fear is meant to motivate us to give.
Following Jesus gives us a different perspective: giving generously is a response to all of God’s good gifts. We give to strengthen our commitment to cocreate with God a world of justice, love, and peace. We are good stewards because of all God has entrusted to us. We take leaps of faith because God keeps inviting us to thrive in community and heal (ourselves and) the world. We give because God keeps showing up, daring us to do something new to reveal the coming kin-dom. We give because in refreshing others, we are refreshed. We give because we believe that our passion and prayer and intelligence and financial resources put (red tennis) shoes on God’s dreams. So let’s give with joy and hope in all that God is doing!
In faith,
Marylee
