Between Shouting and Silence
As I reflected on today’s Luke scripture, I couldn’t help but remember the book, “The Last Week” by M. Borg and J.D. Crossan, which some of you may remember was a Lenten small group study several years ago. What has “stuck” with me is how the Authors contrast Jesus vision of “The Kingdom of God” and Rome’s “Pax Romana”. In one instance, they describe Jesus humble entry to the great city, on a donkey, met by adoring followers shouting, waving fronds and singing, many by this time, convinced that he is the Messiah. Contrast this reception to the other side of the city, where Pilot arrives with great pomp and ceremony, in order to maintain order during Passover. He was probably on a large horse, accompanied by a cadre of calvary and foot soldiers, brandishing weapons, armor and the trimmings of the Roman Empire. I can’t help but think of the response of curious citizens at this sight; concern, worry, fear, resentment, hopelessness, anger and SILENCE.
I must say that in today’s political climate, and the current administration, I have succumbed to these same feelings. Leadership which is willing to cut foreign-aid which literally prevents starvation and communicable diseases in other countries. A willingness to allow invasion and destruction of territories and cities that cultures have inhabited for generations. The persecution of immigrants because of skin color. Oppression of the poor, making access to food, housing, healthcare and education difficult. The victimization of the LGBTQ+ community. A disregard for our environment. In a country whose wealth is the envy of the world, we are witness to growing “economy of empire” and a decline of “Jesus economy”. It’s a time for the “Stones to Shout Out”!
Prayer: Great Spirit, Mystery of the Universe, The Sacred…we are bombarded with social media and news which numbs our hearts to the cries of your People. Our People! Direct us in ways that promote your economy. Amen
