Reflection on Lydia

Sally ArchambaultPastor's Blog

This Sunday our “Faces of Faith” spiritual ancestor is Lydia, who is mentioned in the book of Acts. Little is known about her (even her real name, since Lydia was probably taken from Thyiteria, the place she lived). She was a seller of purple cloth, highly valued and expensive, and had her own household. It might seem like she had everything a woman of her time could want… but she was also a spiritual seeker. She welcomed and made space for the apostles, who told her about the limitless, inclusive love of God known in Jesus Christ. Lydia’s gift of hospitality reminds us that welcoming and making space for others is also a way of making a welcoming place in us for the Holy. Hospitality is a highly valued spiritual gift that any of us can practice. In Lydia’s honor, we are all invited to wear purple on Sunday to Wonder Church at 8:30am and Sanctuary Worship at 9:30am.
