Between Righteousness and Mercy
There is a Godly Play story that is a Rabbinical Parable of the Deep Well. Vicki tells it to our Sunday 4Kids youth. She sets out a large light brown felt underlay, a clay well, many golden threads, a bucket and begins. “In the middle of the desert was a deep well. It was so deep you could not see any water inside. In this very hot place, there was a person traveling very slowly. The person wondered about this well and also saw a bucket and golden threads around the well. The person tied the threads together and then tied them to the bucket. The person lowered the bucket down into the well and drew out cool water. The person tasted the water and was changed. The person left the bucket and threads by the well for others to drink.”
Vicki then asks, “I wonder what the water could really be? I wonder what the golden threads could really be? I wonder if you see yourself anywhere in the story? I wonder what was the most important part of the story?
And the children respond:
“God’s love can be preached anywhere.”
“The well is God.”
“If you have the rope tied together people can find the love.”
“The well is the love of God and never ending.”
‘God’s love makes me feel good and happy.”
“If you have too much hate you cannot spread the knowledge.”
“I see God in the sunshine and in nature.”
“God is a human being.”
“Family is God’s love.”
“God is unlimited love.”
“I find God when I am sad and hurting.”
The Children’s Prayers: Dear God, today I pray that the world can live in peace, forgiveness and friendship. I pray for love between countries and love with enemies as well. Dear God, today I pray for my mom, my dad and me. Dear God, I pray for sunshine, warm weather and lots of friends. Amen
