The movie “The Way”” (2010)
The movie, “The Way”(2010) is an emotional drama written and directed by Emilio Estevez and starring his father Martin Sheen, about a grieving father who completes the approximate 500 mile Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) pilgrimage in Spain after his estranged son dies in a storm there.
The main character is a calm, set in his ways American doctor, who travels to France to collect the remains of his adventurous son. Instead of returning home, he decides to finish his son’s journey along the Camino de Santiago to honor him. While walking the long pilgrimage from France to Spain, he meets other broken, international pilgrims; a Dutchman, a Canadian, and an Irish writer who are searching for meaning in their lives.
The film explores themes of grief, grace, friendship, and the transformation of a man finding his place in the world. It highlights the distinction between the life we live and the life we choose.
The movie acts as a homage to the spiritual journey of the Camino and has inspired many people to walk the route themselves.
