Between Faith and Works
Martha’s Song – Written by Patricia Hitchcock
Dear Jesus I hear that you’re coming to visit. I’m beating the carpets and airing your room. I’m planning to cook the best food from the market. I can’t wait to see you please hurry up soon.
Last time you came sister Mary was raptured She sat at your feet and adored you all day. I guess I can see how that might have seemed better But who’ll do the cooking and clear things away?
You’re only a man and you might not know Orderly homes take more than just prayer. Preparing food takes time in the kitchen, And houses get dusty without lots of care.
I’ve heard people talking about the five thousand; They sat on a hillside and listened all day. When it was evening the time came for supper Your disciples suggested you send them away.
I don’t believe they all were so hapless; Surely the women packed food for the day? One little boy offered loaves and some fishes You blessed and divided and gave it away.
I know that you perform many wonders Healing the sick and raising the dead. Nevertheless I can’t help thinking The miracle of sharing is how each one was fed.
Somebody told me that your mother Mary, Visited by angels and shepherds and kings, Must have been startled to find herself chosen. I bet that she found herself pondering things.
I happen to know that I’m not someone special; My story will never be told in a book. I think of our Father each day while I’m working. I sing while I scrub and I pray while I cook.
You’re more than a man, a healer a teacher; Some people say you’re God’s chosen one. I only know that serving is loving I’m showing my love by the work that I’ve done.
