“The Way Back”
In 1978, Pat and I arrived in Napa ready to start a new business and a family at the same time. Our savings went for a down payment on a house, and we needed to borrow quite a bit of money to start the business from scratch.
We only knew two people here but somehow felt this was the place we needed to be. We recently were reflecting that we should have been terribly frightened at the time, but either through profound naïveté or perhaps some faith, I do not recall us being particularly afraid.
My profession was rapidly becoming more economically driven, and we felt that having our own business would let us choose how we would serve people and how we would charge for our services, hopefully in line with their resources.
Looking back, I still have no doubt we did the right thing and that we continue to realize the rewards of that decision.
