What feels heavy to you today?
Lately, I’ve been struggling with the changes wrought by aging.
I’ve never thought of myself as a “complainer”, but much more frequently I find myself talking about health issues—aches and pains and physical concerns. It annoys me to not be able to rely on my body to do whatever I set my mind to. It frustrates me that tasks take longer to complete, and daily life requires adaptive equipment (ex. hearing aids), and preparation (ex. doing exercises, taking pills, applying this or that).
On a par with handling my own health, observing friends and family struggle with aging challenges, as well as deaths of loved ones, becomes a test of my resilience. Specifically, the ability to navigate emotions and return to a positive outlook. Mustering the energy and courage to move forward through grief and loss can be daunting.
This is the backdrop where my mindful prayers begin.
I greet each day with “Thank you God for giving me another day to live fully:
–to help others
–to appreciate this incredible world
–to make a difference wherever I can in whatever I do
–to be in the present
When I’m in the “doldrums” or having a “pity party” it’s time to ask for help: “God, please give me the gumption to go on…a reason to move forward.” Inevitably, someone will call asking for my assistance/advice, providing the impetus that overcomes my inertia.
At the end of most days I “take stock”, frequently saying “Wow, God, you definitely were with me today! I am grateful for your presence, guidance, and help in my life.”
Prayer: God, you are my strength. I call upon you; I trust in you to guide my steps along your free way. Amen
