THE GIFT OF BEING THUNDERSTRUCK

As a college student I spent a summer working at a camp in Estes Park, Colorado.  Although I had grown up as a member of a Methodist church and attended the Wesley Foundation at my University I was at the age when young people often question everything!  I remember questioning my faith somewhat at that time.

On one of my free afternoons another camp counselor and I hiked up a mountain and when we arrive at the top, we rewarded ourselves by sitting down and taking in the glorious scenery.  I remember that day as if it were yesterday as I had a distinct moment where I felt that God was very much present and had created the beauty I was now gazing at.  It was a bit like being thunderstruck.  As John Wesley said so well, “My heart was strangely warmed.”

My faith has been ever present and such a gift since that time.

Prayer:  Dear God, thank you for the moments when we feel your presence so clearly.  Please be with us when those moments feel far away.  Amen
