Between Grief and Hope
In December 1985, my daughter Laura was born a month early with genetic abnormalities that were not compatible with life. The only prognosis was death, most likely within a week. On day 6, I was at the hospital rocking, singing, and praying. Then I told God that I had to leave in about a half hour. I prayed that if Laura was to die that day, it be while I was with her, so she would feel my love. Within 10 minutes I heard a tiny sigh as she released her last breath. God’s grace and mercy!
That Christmas I strongly identified with God birthing a child, knowing that He was born to die. I felt God’s grief and hope for the world. Nine months later, I was carrying hope for a new life…another chance to dream, plan, and love. In grief there are gifts of hope for a better future and joy with each blessing.
Prayer: Dear God, give us the faith to know that You will sustain us, providing strength and support even in the face of overwhelming sorrow. Amen
Psalm 55:22
“Cast your cares on the LORD and God will sustain you; God will never let the righteous be shaken.”
