THE GIFT OF GETTING LOST

Several weeks ago, the Congregation celebrated New Years with a Dress-up brunch.  At one point we were asked to reflect on what we were grateful for about Napa Methodist and it got me to thinking.

Bonnie and I moved to Napa in 1976, following my graduation and accepting a Physical Therapy position in Vallejo.  It was a chaotic time, buying our first home, settling into a new job, finding health and reliable child care, etc.  Then we began to look for a church home.  We attended several church worship services, however nothing seemed to fit.  Then we decided to give that Church at Fifth and Randolph a try.  I appreciated the relaxed worship style and the “progressive” Gospel message that seemed to be emphasized from the pulpit; also, the music wasn’t bad!

We attended more regularly and found that our young Son seemed happy at Sunday School.  One Sunday we were approached by an older member with a high raspy voice and awkward demeanor inviting us to her class that met during the Sunday School hour.  How could we turn her down?  We were warmly greeted by twelve or so “older” individuals and first impression, this was not for me, “the typical Bible study!” Boy, was I wrong!  You see, this was Helen Moser’s Social Issues class.  She opened the session by pulling out a myriad of newspaper and magazine articles out of an old briefcase.  The ensuing rich discussion was vital and informational.

As years have passed, several of these “class mates” became mentors / guides in the development of my social conscience. You may remember, or have heard about several of them: Ken and Ethel Adams, Austin and NinaMae Miller, Dorothy Wonder, Bill Wingstrom, Donna LaPoint, Wilma Keig, Eva Joell, Jean Low and Doris Forsythe.  Now, I’m not sure I would consider myself “lost” during that period, but I do know that I am forever grateful for their guidance.

Prayer:  Great Spirit, Mystery of the Universe, I am grateful for the “guides” provided in this journey of mine.  Help me to recognize those times I might serve in the same capacity.  Amen
